Dit is het nieuwe circuit in Madrid

Vandaag maakte de Formule 1 bekend dat de Spaanse Grand Prix vanaf 2026 wordt verreden op een nieuw stratencircuit in Madrid. De geruchten gingen al veel langer rond, maar nu is het nieuws dus officieel geworden. De baan bestaat uit een aantal permanente delen en een aantal secties op de openbare weg.

Het circuit slingert rondom het IFEMA-complex en het gaat ook langs het trainingscomplex van voetbalclub Real Madrid. De baan is 5474 meter lang en de coureurs zullen twintig bochten tegenkomen tijdens hun rondje op het IFEMA Madrid Circuit. De organisatie verwacht dat ze een rondetijd zullen gaan rijden van ongeveer 1:32 minuten. Daarnaast kent de lay-out ook een aantal opvallende bochten.

De organisatie heeft meerdere lay-outs overwogen en ze hebben ervoor gekozen om zowel over permanente als delen op straat te rijden. Het gaat hier om eenzelfde soort constructie als in Las Vegas. De baan bestaat uit veel snelle bochten en het zogenaamde Recinto Ferial-complex is verbonden met de Valdebebas-sectie via een tweetal tunnels. Dat betekent dus dat de coureurs tweemaal te maken gaan krijgen met overdekte gedeeltes. In Valdebebas wordt er gereden op privéwegen. Men overweegt nog om in deze sectie een gebankte bocht aan te leggen. Het is nog onduidelijk wanneer de werkzaamheden zullen beginnen.

  Wel een flink aantal snelle bochten voor een stratencircuit, alleen geen enkel recht stuk dat lang genoeg is om iemand in te halen.

Ziet er wel uit als een leuk circuit, mogelijkheid tot 2 DRS zones achter elkaar, een mooie lange doordraaier, chicanes maar ook scherpe bochten. Ik zie een interessante race hierin.

Ik lees veel klachten omtrent Madrid en dat dit te koste zou gaan van de echte circuits. Maar als ik kijk naar de kalender van 2010 valt het allemaal best mee. De afvallers zijn Maleisie, Turkije, Valencia ( onder de naam GP Europa), Duitsland en Noord Korea. In 2010 waren er 19 GP's. Maleisie en Turkije vind ik jammer omdat het leuke circuits zijn maar ze waren niet iconisch. Valencia was bagger, Duitsland is natuurlijk idioot dat die geen GP meer hebben maar ik heb ook niet het idee dat de Duitsers op dit moment warm lopen voor de F1 en Zuid Korea. Zuid Korea was een baan van niks gedreven door de hebzucht van Eccelstone. In dit rijtje mis ik als kijker eigenlijk alleen Maleisie. Vallen er dan nog zoveel iconische circuits af? Volgens mij niet er komen er alleen maar meer terug zoals Zandvoort,Imola en Mexico. De kalender wordt wel steeds voller al hebben we dit jaar een pauze van een maand in oktober waarvan je je af kan vragen of dat wensbaar is. Kan het antwoord zelf wel geven: nee.
