Formule 1-project blokkeert Le Mans-ambities Honda

Het is algemeen bekend dat Honda vanaf 2026 weer Formule 1-motoren gaat leveren. De Japanse fabrikant gaat vanaf dat jaar samenwerken met Aston Martin en ze nemen deze plannen zeer serieus. Dit zorgt er ook voor dat Honda voorlopig niet gaat rijden op Le Mans.

Honda nam eind 2021 officieel afscheid als motorleverancier van Red Bull Racing. Ze wilden hun blik richten op andere zaken, maar ze bleven wel betrokken bij het ontwikkelen van de krachtbronnen. Honda kwam echter terug van hun besluit, want vanaf 2026 gaan ze samenwerken met Aston Martin. De Japanners zijn actief in meerdere klassen, want hun Amerikaanse tak is verantwoordelijk voor het GTP-programma van Acura.

Acura is het enige merk dat enkel een wagen levert in het Amerikaanse IMSA-kampioenschap. De teams die deze auto inzetten willen dan ook met de wagen gaan rijden in de Hypercar-klasse op Le Mans. Op de Autosalon van Tokio liet Honda Racing-president Koji Watanabe weten dat dit niet kan: "Ik zeg niet dat het nooit gaat gebeuren, maar het is een kwestie van prioriteiten. We blijven met onze beperkte mankracht actief in de IndyCar. In de States is de IMSA populair, dus daar willen we winnen. Daar voeg je dat de Formule 1 aan toe. Aangezien een aantal mensen van onze Amerikaanse tak zijn betrokken bij het Formule 1-project, denken we niet aan Le Mans totdat het wat rustiger is."
