Osaka wil niet ten koste van Suzuka op F1-kalender verschijnen

De populariteit van de Formule 1 is terug te zien op de kalender. Er komen steeds meer races bij in de straten van wereldsteden en de lijst met geïnteresseerde partijen wordt steeds langer. Ook de Japanse stad Osaka heeft interesse in het organiseren van een Grand Prix, maar dat moet niet ten koste gaan van Suzuka.

Vorige week was al duidelijk dat men in Osaka interesse heeft in het organiseren van een Grand Prix. Ook hier wil men een race gaan organiseren op een nog te ontwerpen stratencircuit. Het nieuws is niet vreemd, want veel wereldsteden trekken aan de Formule 1. Deze week werd bijvoorbeeld bekend gemaakt dat de Spaanse Grand Prix vanaf 2026 wordt verreden op een stratencircuit in Madrid.

Suzuka

In Osaka wil men echter niet het plekje van het iconische Suzuka afpakken. Suzuka is razend populair onder de fans en de coureurs, maar het contract loopt wel eind 2024 af. Het hoofd van het toerisme van Osaka, Hiroshi Mizohata laat aan Motorsport.com weten dat zijn race niet ten koste mag gaan van Suzuka: "Het zou fantastisch zijn voor Japan om twee races te hebben, we zijn een grootmacht op autogebied."

Toerisme

Mizohata was samen met een delegatie vanuit Osaka aanwezig bij de Grand Prix van Singapore om te kijken wat het organiseren van een race inhoudt. Hij zag daar allerlei interessante zaken: "De Formule 1 is een perfecte katalysator om van Osaka een internationale toeristenstad te maken. Om dat voor elkaar te krijgen is het nodig om rijke mensen vanuit Amerika, Europa en Australië aan te trekken. We geloven dat de Formule 1 ons kan helpen om luxehotels naar de stad te halen en het nachtleven nieuw leven in te blazen."
