Barcelona rekent op contractverlenging

Eerder deze week maakte de Formule 1 bekend dat de Spaanse Grand Prix vanaf 2026 wordt verreden in Madrid. De coureurs zullen daar gaan rijden op een nieuw stratencircuit. Wat dit betekent voor de toekomst van het circuit van Barcelona is nog onduidelijk, maar de Catalanen hebben nog goede hoop.

De Spaanse Grand Prix wordt al enkele tientallen jaren verreden op het circuit van Barcelona. De baan wordt ook veel gebruikt voor tests en de coureurs kennen dan ook elke centimeter van het Catalaanse asfalt. Formule 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali stelde vlak na de presentatie van de race in Madrid al dat dit niet betekent dat Barcelona van de kalender gaat vallen. De Formule 1 en de mensen in Barcelona praten dan ook nog over een nieuw contract.

In Barcelona hebben ze er alle vertrouwen in dat ze in de toekomst nog een Grand Prix kunnen organiseren. Lokale politicus en kopstuk van het circuit Roger Torrent is duidelijk in gesprek met RAC1: "We beschikken over een contract tot en met 2026. En zoals Domenicali zelf al heeft aangeven werken we aan een contract waardoor de Formule 1 nog vele jaren kan racen in Catalonië. We zijn momenteel in gesprek. We praten al lang met elkaar, maar we doen het op ons eigen tempo. De relatie tussen de sport en Catalonië is iets tussen ons en geen ander element zet dat onder druk."

  Heel veel contracten lopen bijna af. Zandvoort en Spa ook. Alleen zandbakken en stratencircuits hebben een langlopend contract.

Niet de meest spectaculaire plaats maar omdat er zoveel historie is gebeurd zou het jammer zijn om dit kwijt te raken aan een of andere Madrid.
