Aston Martin wil strijd aangaan met Ferrari en Mercedes

Het team van Aston Martin presteerde vorig jaar verrassend sterk in de Formule 1. De Britse renstal was geruime tijd het tweede team achter Red Bull Racing en Fernando Alonso stond regelmatig op het podium. Volgens Stoffel Vandoorne is het het doel om volgend jaar de strijd aan te gaan met Ferrari en Mercedes.

Aston Martin was vorig jaar de grote verrassing van het Formule 1-seizoen. Ze leken van het middenveld naar de kop van het veld te stappen en de prestaties waren dan ook zeker niet slecht. In de eerste paar races van het seizoen stond Fernando Alonso op het podium en ook later in het jaar liet hij zijn stuurmanskunsten zien. In de laatste fase van het seizoen zakten de prestaties van Aston Martin een beetje in, maar dat geeft ze alleen maar ruimte voor verbetering.

Verrassing

Reservecoureur Stoffel Vandoorne is trots op de prestaties van zijn team. De Belg kijkt met een tevreden gevoel terug op het afgelopen seizoen in gesprek met Motorsportweek: "Afgelopen jaar was een beetje een verrassing. Vooral als je kijkt naar hoe competitief we waren aan het begin van het seizoen. Daarna zaten we inderdaad een beetje in een dal en tegen het einde van het jaar kwamen we weer een beetje terug."

Doelstelling

Vandoorne stelt dat Aston Martin veel heeft geleerd tijdens de afgelopen maanden, maar hij stelt ook dat er nog niet veel valt te zeggen over de mogelijke resultaten. Hij deelt wel de doelstelling van Aston Martin: "De andere teams staan ook niet stil. Red Bull zet momenteel de toon, laten we zeggen dat het niet makkelijk is voor iedereen om hen te verslaan. Ze zullen dus zeker mee gaan doen. Je hebt ook de teams van Mercedes en Ferrari, dat zijn ook grote jongens. Dus ik denk dat het ons doel is om meer met hen te vechten. We moeten eerst maar eens afwachten hoe we ervoor staan."

En toch vind ik het vreemd dat hier helemaal niet over McLaren gepraat wordt. Dat team was in de laatste races duidelijk het tweede team. Verwacht niet dat dat begin dit seizoen dramatisch anders gaat zijn.

De kans is groot dat Alonso misschien met Ferrari en Benz kan vechten maar Stroll heeft geen kans denk ik.
