Titanenduel beslist spannende 24 uur van Daytona

Afgelopen weekend werd in Daytona één van de grootste races uit de enduranceracerij verreden. De 24 uur van Daytona kende een sterk startveld met veel bekende namen en het publiek werd getrakteerd op een spannende race. Uiteindelijk ging de zege naar de Porsche die werd bestuurd door onder meer Felipe Nasr.

De 24 uur van Daytona stond afgelopen weekend in de schijnwerpers. Aangezien de reglementen er sinds vorig jaar voor zorgen dat fabrikanten met hun wagens kunnen rijden in zowel de topklasses van het WEC en het IMSA-kampioenschap, stonden er veel topteams aan de start. Porsche, Cadillac, BMW en Acura stonden allemaal met hun wagens aan de start in de GTP-klasse. Daarnaast werd er ook gekeken naar Brad Pitt, de Hollywood-ster was aanwezig op Daytona voor opnames van zijn Formule 1-film.

Renger van der Zande ging met zijn teamgenoten van de Cadillac met startnummer 1 op jacht naar de zege. De Nederlander vocht mee voor de zege, maar hij liep tegen problemen aan. Van der Zande en zijn teamgenoten Sébastien Bourdais, Scott Dixon en Alex Palou vielen uit en dat zorgde voor de nodige teleurstelling. Nadat meerdere andere kanshebbers ook wegvielen, bleven er nog maar twee kanshebbers voor de zege over.

Episch gevecht

De Porsche met startnummer 7 en de Cadillac met startnummer 31 vochten een titanenduel uit en dat zorgde voor veel spektakel. Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Felipe Nasr zag vanuit zijn Porsche-cockpit hoe Cadillac-coureur Tom Blomqvist steeds dichterbij kwam. Blomqvist opende de aanval en hij gebruikte een GT-wagen bij zijn actie. Hij passeerde de achterblijver aan de binnenkant, terwijl Nasr aan de binnenkant reed. Blomqvist voltooide de geweldige inhaalactie, maar toch wist hij niet te winnen.

Indy Dontje

De Porsche kreeg de leiding namelijk weer in handen en hij hield deze positie vast. De Braziliaan won samen met zijn teamgenoten Josef Newgarden, Matt Campbell en Dane Cameron de race. De Cadillac van Blomqvist en zijn teamgenoten werd tweede. Enkelvoudig Formule 1-wereldkampioen Jenson Button maakte met zijn teamgenoten het podium compleet. Er was ook Nederlands succes, want Indy Dontje won met zijn teamgenoten Philip Ellis, Daniel Morad en Russell Ward in de GTD-klasse.

ik heb echt weer genoten, hulde weer aan Ziggo dat ze het hebben uitgezonden. Dat gevecht van Indy Dontje om plek 1 was met name fantastisch. Zo'n mooi duel tussen de AMG en de Ferrari terwijl er om de haverklap ook nog de prototypes langs vlogen. Geef het je te doen om terwijl je om plek 1 knokt... [Lees verder]

Leuke race. Ik heb moeite met Endurance te volgen, maar bij deze met regelmaat even ingeschakeld.

Vooral de nachturen vind ik op een baan als de roval van Daytona erg chaotisch om te volgen.

Vond BMW wel wat zwak overkomen.

  en wat was ik blij met een regisseur die dat gewoon tig rondes lang bleef volgen ipv alleen de leidende LMP's te laten zien.
  
  De endurance word elk jaar boeiender om te zien, t gaat zo snel tegenwoordig en het is inmiddels veranderd in een soort sprintrace van 24 uur lang....
