Het is geen geheim dat de Formule 1 momenteel zeer populair is. Vooral Lewis Hamilton heeft veel fans, vooral in Brazilië wordt hij op handen gedragen. De Brit is in dat land nu slachtoffer geworden van identiteitsfraude en dat zorgde bijna voor een flinke oplichting.

Hamilton is enorm populair in Brazilië. De Britse zevenvoudig wereldkampioen is zelfs ereburger van het land en dat betekent dus ook dat hij in alle lagen van de bevolking fans heeft in het Zuid-Amerikaanse land. Het probleem is dan ook dat er mensen proberen te profiteren van Hamiltons roem. Nu blijkt dat Hamiltons naam ook wordt gebruikt door oplichters om een aardige hoeveelheid geld te verdienen.

Volgens het Braziliaanse medium Metrópoles is er nu een zaak aan het licht gekomen waarbij Hamiltons naam werd gebruikt door oplichters. Een Braziliaanse vrouw dacht via social media in contact te zijn gekomen met de zevenvoudig wereldkampioen. Ze werd echter achterdochtig en vroeg om een audiobericht, deze bleek achteraf te zijn gemaakt met kunstmatige intelligentie. Uiteindelijk vroeg de oplichter de vrouw om een soort fankaart te kopen ter waarde van 1500 dollar. Daarna ondernam de vrouw stappen en werd duidelijk dat ze het slachtoffer was geworden van oplichting. De oplichters hadden het account van Hamilton zo nagemaakt, dat de vrouw er in eerste instantie vanuit ging dat het echt was.
