Mercedes-icoon 'weggeblazen' door Hamilton-transfer

De aanstaande transfer van Lewis Hamilton naar Ferrari blijft voor veel verbazing zorgen. Weinig mensen hadden zien aankomen dat de Brit het team van Mercedes zou gaan verlaten. Ook Norbert Haug wist niet wat hij las, hij stelt dat hij werd weggeblazen door het teams.

Hamilton rijdt al sinds 2013 voor het team van Mercedes. De zevenvoudig wereldkampioen verlengde eind vorig jaar zijn contract bij het team, maar hij maakt nu gebruik van een speciale clausule waardoor hij naar Ferrari kan vertrekken. Het zorgde anderhalve week geleden voor veel verbazing en Hamilton heeft hiermee het silly season afgetrapt. Mercedes moet immers op zoek gaan naar een nieuwe topcoureur.

Eeuwigheid

Voormalig Mercedes-kopman Norbert Haug had nooit verwacht dat Hamilton zou vertrekken. Haug snapt het nog steeds niet en hij spreekt zich uit bij Motorsport-Magazin: "Ik werd helemaal weggeblazen, ik kon het niet geloven. Als ik op één ding had gewed, op een combinatie in de Formule 1 die eeuwig zou blijven bestaan, dan was het Lewis Hamilton en Mercedes geweest. Het is zo'n hechte band. Lewis was als 14-jarige jongen in 1998 in het Mercedes Museum, toen Häkkinen kampioen werd. Lewis was in 1998 al een Mercedes-man en dat zal zo tot het eind van 2024 blijven. Dat is een eeuwigheid."

Verrassing

Haug blijft erbij dat de transfer van Hamilton ongelooflijk is. De voormalig Mercedes-man is alleen wel van mening dat het geen ramp is voor de sport: "Ik had het in geen enkel stadium van mijn verbeelding kunnen verwachten. Echt niet. Maar het is geen drama. Als ik mij echter een verrassing zou moeten voorstellen die de Formule 1 te bieden heeft, dan zou het Lewis Hamilton die Mercedes verlaat zijn."
