Vasseur onthult 'moeilijk' telefoontje met Sainz

Het team van Ferrari zorgde tijdens de wintermaanden voor veel opschudding in de Formule 1. Ze maakten immers bekend dat Lewis Hamilton per 2025 voor het team gaat rijden. Dit gaat ten koste van Carlos Sainz. Teambaas Frédéric Vasseur geeft toe dat hij het zeer moeilijk vond om dit nieuws aan Sainz te vertellen.

Met de komst van Hamilton stunt Ferrari op de rijdersmarkt. De Britse zevenvoudig wereldkampioen tekende eind vorig jaar nog een nieuw contract bij Mercedes en hij leek zijn loopbaan ook te gaan afsluiten bij dat team. Toch kon hij de interesse van Ferrari niet van zich afschuiven. Hij tekende een meerderjarig contract dat ingaat in 2025. Carlos Sainz zit hierdoor zonder contract voor het aankomende seizoen.

Ferrari-teambaas Frédéric Vasseur moest dit nieuws aan Sainz vertellen. De Franse teambaas vond dit een lastige en zware taak. Vasseur noemt het niet het makkelijkste telefoontje uit zijn leven en hij wordt geciteerd door RaceFans: "Het was één van de moeilijkste telefoontjes, samen met het belletje richting Toto. Maar ik weet zeker dat hij een enorm professionele coureur is, hij begrijpt dat we een lang seizoen voor de boeg hebben en dat er grote kansen liggen. We hebben lange discussies gevoerd, maar ik sta volledig achter Carlos. Hij is enorm betrokken en we weten dat we het samen moeten doen."

Ik had al voorspeld dat we nog weken zo niet maanden, zo niet de rest van het jaar over de Hamilton-transfer en nasleep zou gaan, maar de media weten zichzelf altijd te overtreffen met het opblazen van oudbakken nieuws.

  Lastige zaak. Aan de andere kant heeft Leclerc de potentie en kan mogelijk net die laatste stap met Hamilton of Alonso als teamgenoot.
