Het team van Mercedes staat voor een lastig jaar. Ze moeten immers op zoek gaan naar een opvolger van Lewis Hamilton voor het aankomende seizoen. Het is nog maar de vraag of George Russell het in zich heeft om de kar te gaan trekken, Eddie Jordan heeft daar zo zijn twijfels over.

Het team van Mercedes leek zich te kunnen gaan opmaken voor een seizoen waarin ze zich konden focussen op hun wederopstanding. Niets bleek echter minder waar, want Lewis Hamilton maakte begin deze maand bekend dat hij per 2025 gaat rijden voor het team van Ferrari. Hiermee zadelt hij Mercedes met een probleem op, want ze moeten nu gaan zoeken naar een nieuwe topcoureur.

George Russell kan ook de kar gaan trekken bij Mercedes. Maar niet iedereen is overtuigd van de rijkunsten van de Brit. Voormalig Jordan-teambaas Eddie Jordan vraagt zich in de podcast 'Formula for Success' af of Russell een echte kopman kan zijn: "Laten we eerlijk zijn, George heeft nog maar één Grand Prix gewonnen. Denken we dat George wereldkampioen kan worden in de komende jaren? Ik denk dat Lewis sneller was. Toen Lewis niet de gewenste auto had, kon George daar omheen rijden. Lewis wist dat het niet de juiste auto was voor de job. Tijdens het seizoen ging het beter met Lewis waardoor wij allemaal dachten dat hij het heilige vuur weer had gevonden."
