'Turkije wil Grand Prix terughalen met speciale strategie'

Het aanstaande Formule 1-seizoen wordt het drukste jaar uit de geschiedenis van de sport. Er staan 24 Grands Prix op de kalender, maar de kans is aanwezig dat er in de toekomst nog meer races gaan bijkomen. Ook vanuit Turkije toont men nu weer interesse in het organiseren van een Grand Prix.

De Turkse Grand Prix stond in het verleden meerdere keren op de kalender. De race werd van 2005 tot en met 2011 verreden op het circuit van Istanbul Park. De Grand Prix verdween daarna van de kalender om in coronajaren 2020 en 2021 weer terug te keren. Aangezien veel contracten van Grands Prix eind 2025 aflopen, ziet men in Turkije kans om een comeback te maken op de Formule 1-kalender in 2026.

Men heeft daarvoor een opvallende strategie verzonnen. De Franse tak van Motorsport.com meldt dat het contract van circuitbeheerder Intercity later dit jaar afloopt. Het bedrijf zal dit contract niet gaan verlengen en een overheidsinstelling heeft een speciale tender uitgeschreven. De nieuwe beheerder moet de baan dertig jaar gaan huren en daarvoor moeten ze 110 miljoen euro gaan aftikken. Maar er zit nog een addertje onder het gras. De nieuwe beheerder moet namelijk aan een aantal verplichtingen gaan voldoen, waaronder het garanderen van het terughalen van de Grand Prix vanaf 2026.
