FOTA-voorzitter legt lot van teamverbond in handen van de teams

Als de teams aangeven dat ze niet verder willen met de teamassociatie FOTA, dan houdt het verbond op te bestaan. Dat stelt FOTA-voorzitter en McLaren-teambaas Martin Whitmarsh in gesprek met Autosport. De Brit reageert op uitspraken van collega's van Ferrari en Red Bull Racing, die zich openlijk afvroegen of de FOTA nog nut heeft.

Whitmarsh: Ik ben niet bezorgd over de toekomst van de FOTA. Ik heb nooit gesproken over de inhoud van onze vergaderingen. Dat zou verkeerd zijn, we zijn geen PR-machine. We zijn hier om bij te dragen aan de verbetering van de Formule 1. De FOTA mag trots zijn op wat het tot nu toe bereikt heeft. We kunnen alleen doen wat de leden willen dat we doen en we hebben nog het nodige te doen, maar we zien wel hoe we verder gaan.

We moeten deze business runnen en we hebben diverse kwetsbare teams. Historisch gezien hebben de winnende en grote teams zich nooit druk gemaakt om de kleine teams. McLaren reed in Zuid-Korea zijn zevenhonderdste Grand Prix en sinds onze entree zijn 107 teams gesneuveld. We kunnen ons niet veroorloven om teams de nek om te draaien aan het tempo dat het de afgelopen jaren gebeurde. Daarom spendeer ik tijd aan en geloof ik in de FOTA.

We hebben een verplichting om te proberen de kleine teams te helpen overleven. We hebben niet bereikt wat we wilden bereiken, maar mijn auto's gaan ook nooit zo snel als ik wil, ik ben nooit zo rijk als ik zou willen. Dat is het leven. Voor een associatie met zoveel verschillende belangen is het fantastisch dat we wel het nodige hebben bereikt. Dingen als lagere kosten, DRS en Fans Forum komen uit de koker van de FOTA. Maar je kan nooit genoeg doen.

Er zijn mensen die baat hebben bij het opdoeken van de FOTA, maar wat telt is wat de teams verlangen. Dus als zij als leden tot de conclusie komen dat we het niet nodig hebben, dan is dat prima. Dan stoppen we en gaan we wat anders doen.

De FOTA dreigt ten onder te gaan aan het eigenbelang van Ferrari en Red Bull. Erg dom want gezamenlijk bereik je meer. Zowel tegen de FIA als tegen Bernie...
