Winnaar van spectaculaire Italiaanse Grand Prix 1971 overleden

Peter Gethin is na een lang ziektebed overleden op 71 jarige leeftijd. De voormalig BRM-, McLaren- en Lola-coureur wist in zijn carriére één race te winnen, de Grand Prix van Italië in 1971. Deze race werd bekend door de ultra spannende finish waarbij de top vijf slechts 0.61 seconden van elkaar eindigden.

In 1970 maakte Gethin in Zandvoort zijn Formule 1-debuut als vervanger van de verongelukte Bruce McLaren. Een jaar later won hij zijn eerste en enige race, waarbij de nummer vijf uit de eindstand slechts 0.61 seconden achter hem eindigde. Gethin behaalde in zijn 30 Grands Prix dus één overwinning en 11 podiumplaatsen.
