Dagverslag motoren etappe 14: Cyril Despres wint titanenstrijd van Coma

Cyril Despres heeft vandaag voor de vierde maal in zijn carriére de Dakar-rally op zijn naam geschreven. De Fransman was twee weken lang in gevecht met de Spanjaard Marc Coma en na twaalf etappes was het verschil tussen beide heren nog geen twee minuten. De laatste paar special stages deden Coma uiteindelijk toch de das om. Beste Nederlandse deelnemer in het klassement is uiteindelijk toch Frans Verhoeven geworden.

Zoals al gezegd ging de strijd om de eerste positie bij de motoren de gehele rally tussen Cyril Despres en Marc Coma. De Fransman was echter de betere van de twee. Ondanks dat Coma in de laatste paar etappes dichterbij kwam aan de leider, kreeg Despres de eindzege min of meer cadeau door een tijdstraf van Coma op het einde van de rally.

Despres scoort hiermee alweer zijn vierde Dakar-zege en is vanaf 2005 nog nooit lager geëindigd dan de tweede positie. Coma, de winnaar van vorig jaar, scoorde in 2012 nog wel vijf dagzeges, twee meer dan Despres, maar liep vaak achter de feiten aan.

Frans Verhoeven eindigde dit jaar als beste Nederlander in het klassement. Onze landgenoot stapte dit jaar over naar Sherco, een klein en onervaren team. Vooral in de tweede en vijfde etappe kende Verhoeven problemen met zijn motor, waar hij enkele keren flink boos is geworden op zijn monteurs. Na de rustdag leken ze het beter voor elkaar te hebben.

Verhoeven was inmiddels al ver teruggezakt in het klassement, van de zevende naar de 31e plaats, maar hij gaf niet op. Verhoeven passeerde Henk Knuiman weer als beste Nederlander en eindigde de rally uiteindelijk als vijftiende. Hoogtepunten zijn de tweede en derde plaatsen tijdens de derde en vierde etappes.

  Helemaal juist Jess! Zowel bij de motos als bij de auto\'s werden er dubieuze beslissingen gemaakt ten voordele van.... Franse favorietjes. Had Coma graag zien winnen!

  Ja, het is dat er bij de vrachtwagens geen Franse kanshebbers waren, anders hadden ze wel wat verzonnen om ook daar een Fransman op de eerste positie te krijgen...
