Lotus hinkt op twee gedachten over lidmaatschap FOTA

Lotus F1 Team heeft overwogen om teamverbond FOTA te verlaten, zoals Red Bull Racing, Ferrari en Sauber eerder deden, en de kwestie speelt nog steeds een rol. Teameigenaar Gerard Lopez: Iedereen heeft het overwogen. Wij zeker ook, maar we hebben de knoop nog niet doorgehakt.

Dat komt vooral omdat Lotus samen met de andere FOTA-leden een strenge Resource Restriction Agreement op wil stellen. Ik haat het om dit te zeggen, maar ik denk niet dat een Formule 1-team momenteel winstgevend kan zijn. Het zit waarschijnlijk zo dicht als het kan bij het break-even-punt. Met een strikte RRA, die wij tot stand willen brengen, zou winst maken mogelijk zijn. Maar dan nog investeer je alles dat je overhoudt in het verbeteren van de auto. Het is een moeilijke vraag om te beantwoorden.

Het is geen kwestie van cijfers, het is meer een kwestie van voor eens en altijd een RRA formuleren waaraan iedereen zich moet houden. Ik noem expres geen getallen, want dat is eerder gebeurd en daaraan is toen niet voldaan. Het zou goed zijn voor de Formule 1, we zien het in andere sporten ook. De NBA hanteert bijvoorbeeld succesvol een salarislimiet. Ik heb geen moeite met een hoge grens, maar bepaal een limiet waar iedereen zich aan dient te conformeren.
