Hulkenberg: "Niet goed dat we ons zorgen moeten maken"

Force India-coureur Nico Hulkenberg heeft zich als een van de weinige coureurs uitgelaten over de onveilige situatie in Bahrein. Monteurs van de Indiase renstal beleefden gisteravond de schrik van hun leven toen ze met hun busje midden in een geëscaleerde confrontatie tussen activisten en de politie belandden, waarbij een molotov cocktail vlak bij hun voertuig tot ontploffing kwam.

Er zijn gelukkig geen gewonden, maar de schrik zit er goed in. Hulkenberg vindt het verkeerd dat de teams en coureurs aan deze risico's blootgesteld worden. "Het is uiteraard niet goed dat dit soort dingen gebeurt. We zijn hier om te racen, Formule 1 draait om entertainment, en dit mag ons eigenlijk niet overkomen. Of het verantwoord is dat we hier zijn of niet, dat weet ik niet. Moeilijk te zeggen, ik ben geen politicus. Ik ben een Formule 1-coureur, maar zoiets als gisteren hoort gewoon niet plaats te vinden. Het is niet goed dat we ons zorgen moeten maken. Zo is de situatie nu eenmaal, laten we hopen dat de rest van het weekend rustig en kalm verloopt."
