Yas Marina Circuit bekritiseert opsplitsing young drivers-test

De leiding van het Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi baalt dat de young drivers-test op hun baan in het water lijkt te vallen. Door het drukke schema aan het einde van het jaar met veel races hebben de teams besloten om een alternatieve sessie op Silverstone na de Britse Grand Prix te organiseren. Renstallen zijn vrij in hun keuze, maar vooralsnog opteren alleen Red Bull Racing en Scuderia Toro Rosso voor Abu Dhabi.

Door het midden in het seizoen te doen gaat de vrijblijvendheid en onschuld van de young drivers-test verloren, zo stelt Yas Marina Circuit-directeur Richard Cregan in The National. "Voor een goede jonge coureur is het niet ideaal om halverwege het jaar een Formule 1-test af te werken. Die jongens moeten zich focussen op hun eigen kampioenschappen. Daardoor paste het in Abu Dhabi altijd zo goed, omdat het aan het einde van het seizoen was. Bovendien is het in de eerste plek een sessie om jonge rijders een kans te geven om aan de Formule 1 te proeven. De auto ontwikkelen en nieuwe onderdelen aan de tand voelen zijn bijzaak, al betwijfel ik of dat nu zo blijft."
