Mercedes: "Uitstel nieuwe motoren verhoogt kosten alleen maar"

De Formule 1-teams, de internationale autosportbond FIA en Bernie Ecclestone kwamen gisteren in Monaco bijeen om een nieuwe impuls om de kosten in de koningsklasse van de autosport te verlagen, te bespreken. Op de agenda stond ook de invoering van de nieuwe motorformule voor 2014, waarvan sommige teams vrezen dat het de kosten verhoogt.

Uitstel van de nieuwe krachtbronnen is echter geen optie, het lost in elk geval niets op. Dat meldt Mercedes-motorsportbaas Norbert Haug aan Autosport. "Het is een kwestie van geld. We hebben nu diverse programma's parallel aan elkaar lopen en we moeten daar een programma in schrappen. We kunnen niet alles subsidiëren. Feit is dat we deze weg ingeslagen zijn en dat het later doen meer geld kost. Ferrari, Renault en wij, plus PURE, geven meer uit als we meer moeten ontwikkelen."

McLaren-teambaas Martin Whitmarsh vindt dat de prijs voor klantenmotoren niet te veel mag oplopen. "Bij mijn weten heeft niemand al cijfers genoemd, maar het merendeel van de grid kan geen 20, 25 miljoen euro per jaar voor motoren ophoesten. Daar moeten we met de FIA en de motorleveranciers aan werken. We respecteren dat motorfabrikanten veel geld investeren in de nieuwe krachtbronnen, maar de teams hebben daar nooit om gevraagd en veel renstallen kunnen het zich niet veroorloven om veel geld aan motoren uit te geven."

Ehrmmm ..
Meneer Whitmarsh, U heeft misschien niet gevraagd om investeringen in de nieuwe moter, maar U wilt wel over 2 jaar een betrouwbare krachtbron achterin waar U mee in staat bent wedstrijden te winnen. Een moter waar slechts 100.000 aan ontwikkelingskosten in zit levert waarschijnlijk niet die mogelijkheden...
