Le Mans: ACO kondigt Aziatische Le Mans Series aan voor 2013

Le Mans-organisator Automobile Club de l'Ouest (ACO) heeft bekend gemaakt dat volgend jaar een Aziatische versie van de Le Mans Series opgestart wordt. Het kampioenschap zal uit zes evenementen bestaan. De races duren in 2013 drie uur en dat neemt voor 2014 toe naar vier uur. Elke line-up bevat verplicht een coureur uit Azië en de winnaars van de LMP2-, Formule Le Mans- en GTE-klassen worden beloond met een startplek voor de 24 uur van Le Mans.

Het circuit van Zhuhai is gastheer voor de openingsrace. Daarna staan rondes in Sjanghai, Ordos, een nog nader te bepalen locatie in China, Fuji en tot slot Sentul op het programma. ACO-president Pierre Fillon: "We moeten Le Mans Series-wedstrijden organiseren in groeimarkten, wat autofabrikanten de mogelijkheid biedt om daar hun betrouwbaarheid tentoon te spreiden, hun imago te versterken en de kwaliteit van hun nieuwe technologieen te demonstreren. Dat is van toepassing op China en op Azië als geheel."
