Martin Whitmarsh neemt Sam Michael in bescherming

McLaren-teambaas Martin Whitmarsh is in de bres gesprongen voor Sam Michael, sinds dit jaar in Woking werkzaam als sportief directeur. Het team van McLaren valt dit jaar niet op door vlekkeloze optredens, er is al veel mis gegaan bij de Britse renstal. Sommige criticasters kijken daarvoor naar Michael, die eerder bij Williams de hooggespannen verwachtingen niet waar kon maken.

Whitmarsh vindt het belachelijk dat Michael verantwoordelijk wordt gehouden voor de bijvoorbeeld de vele mislukte pitstops. Aan Autosport deelde de teambaas mede: "Sam heeft een zware tijd achter de rug met hoge verwachtingen, maar hij is goed leidersmateriaal. Hij is eiamnd die ongetwijfeld de ambitie koestert om mijn baan op een dag over te nemen. Dat is gezond, voorheen was er niemand die uit was op mijn positie. Dit is een gezonde dynamiek."

"Ik kende Sam nog niet heel goed, maar in bijeenkomsten kwam hij op me over als sterk en oprecht. Dat sprak me aan en ik dacht dat we hem goed konden gebruiken. We pushen verder. De afgelopen twee races hadden wij de snelste pitstops, alleen gaat de aandacht daar helaas niet naar uit. Men focust zich op die ene stop die de mist in ging. Dat is prima. Ik maak me daar geen zorgen over en Sam ook niet."
