Silverstone leert lesje van chaotische Britse Grand Prix 2012

Het circuit van Silverstone was het afgelopen weekend het middelpunt van de koningsklasse van de autosport. De Formule 1 is immens populair in Engeland en het publiek kwam in grote getale af op de Britse Grand Prix. Dat leidde, mede door het slechte weer, tot een gigantische verkeerschaos; met ellenlange files en modderige grasvelden als parkeerplaatsen.

Silverstone raadde voor zaterdag zelfs mensen zonder parkeerkaart af om de baan te bezoeken. De circuitleiding belooft beterschap. Directeur Richard Phillips: "We hebben genoeg om op te reflecteren. De campeervelden vormen de grootste uitdaging. Bij goed weer is dat geen enkel probleem, maar bij slecht weer sluiten de beheerders die velden af en dan dolen die camping-gangers maar wat rond. Caravans en campers zijn niet echt geschikt voor die velden, veel minder in elk geval dan tenten."

"We moeten meer wegen aanleggen en meer parkeerplaatsen verharden. Er zijn lessen te leren uit deze editie en die vertalen naar verbeterpunten voor de toekomst. We moesten vrijdag moeilijke beslissingen nemen en ik denk dat het juist was om sommigen te adviseren om op zaterdag weg te blijven. Was de vrijdag goed verlopen, dan hadden we misschien niet dit besluit genomen en was de racedag mogelijk verpest. Dus op een bizarre manier was dit wellicht wel het beste."
