Whitmarsh: "Concorde Agreement zonder FIA zou verwarrend zijn"

De internationale autosportbond FIA is nog geen onderdeel geweest van de gesprekken over een nieuw Concorde Agreement, maar als het aan McLaren-teambaas Martin Whitmarsh ligt komt daar snel verandering in. Volgens hem speelt de federatie een essentiële rol in de koningsklasse van de autosport en is het belangrijk om de FIA in de Concorde Agreement op te nemen.

Whitmarsh deelde aan Autosport mede: "Je kan puur een commerciële overeenkomst opstellen tussen de teams en Bernie Ecclestone. Maar als je aan een kampioenschap onder de vlag van de FIA deelneemt zou het verwarrend zijn om de bond niet als derde partij bij de Concorde Agreement te betrekken. Het zou goed zijn om een akkoord te bereiken tussen de teams, de commerciële rechtenhouder en de FIA. Ik hoop dat we daar naartoe werken."

"In het verleden was het mechanisme van onderhandelen gelijktijdig, dus we kwamen allemaal bij elkaar en tekenden. Maar dat is niet hoe het nu gaat. Het gebeurt onafhankelijk van elkaar, op een andere manier. De meeste teams hebben zich verbonden aan de nieuwe Concorde Agreement, de teams die dat niet nog niet deden volgen spoedig en ik denk dat Bernie ook de FIA wel weet te overtuigen. En dat moet samensmelten in een gezamenlijke overeenkomst."
