Pirelli verwacht eind dit jaar indicatie over vervolg in Formule 1

Bandenleverancier Pirelli hoopt voor de jaarwisseling een signaal op te vangen over de toekomst in de Formule 1. De Italiaanse bandenfabrikant bezit een na 2013 aflopend contract, maar wil absoluut verder. Voorwaarde is wel dat die wens binnen alle gelederen in de Formule 1 leeft.

Pirelli-motorsportbaas Paul Hembery vertrouwde ESPN F1 toe: "De uiterste datum voor duidelijkheid is juni volgend jaar, maar dat is vrij laat en ik verwacht eind dit jaar al een indicatie over de toekomst. Als de sport verlangt dat wij blijven, de voorwaarden competitief zijn en de Formule 1 een visie nastreeft waar wij achter staan, dan is het aantrekkelijk voor Pirelli. Wij zijn bijvoorbeeld blij met het globale imago van de Formule 1, probeer maar eens andere jaarlijkse sportevenementen met een wereldwijd bereik te bedenken."

"De Formule 1 bekleedt een unieke positie wat dat betreft en het spreekt ons aan dat de sport groeit in markten als Azië, Rusland en Amerika. De organisatie heeft er veel voor over om eindelijk voet aan de grond te krijgen in de Verenigde Staten. Dit zijn locaties waar we graag zichtbaar zijn, dus dat past perfect bij ons businessplan. Het bestuur is gelukkig, maar dat kan natuurlijk veranderen. De omstandigheden kunnen veranderen, evenals de kosten. Dat zijn kwesties die we beoordelen zodra we horen of de Formule 1 verder wil met Ferrari."
