Barrichello: "Formule 1 zou IndyCar-circuits nooit goedkeuren"

Rubens Barrichello maakt dit seizoen voor het eerst in twintig jaar geen deel uit van het Formule 1-gilde. Noodgedwongen zocht hij zijn heil maar in Amerika, in de IndyCar. Daar keek hij in zijn eerste maanden zijn ogen uit, een wereld van verschil met de omgeving die hij gewend was.

Barrichello liet aan Auto Motor und Sport weten: "In het begin voelde de auto langzaam. Maar zodra je op Indianapolis met die wagens rijdt, dan denk je wel anders over snelheid. Ik bestuur een bolide die tweehonderd kilo zwaarder is dan wat ik gewend was, dus de precieze en soepele rijstijl die ik negentien jaar in de Formule 1 hanteerde heb ik hier niet nodig. Ik moet agressief zijn, wat een beetje tegen mijn natuur in is."

"Als voormalig voorzitter van rijdersvakbond GPDA kan ik concluderen dat we de meeste IndyCar-circuits nooit goed zouden keuren voor de Formule 1. De Formule 1-coureurs zouden gewoon weigeren om er naartoe te gaan. De banen zijn erg hobbelig en er zijn geen uitwijkmogelijkheden. Het is even wennen, je raakt verwend in de Formule 1. Als we met de IndyCar Europese circuits zouden bezoeken, dan zou ik beter uit de verf komen."

"In de Formule 1 heb je veel elektronische speeltjes die in de IndyCar ontbreken. Bij de set-up kan je maar een beperkt aantal dingen doen, de klassieke aspecten als de vering, de dempers en de anti roll-bar. Daar is niets mis mee, er is gewoon minder geld beschikbaar. Hier kan je een auto in elkaar zetten voor vijf miljoen dollar. Voor de Formule 1 heb je vijftig miljoen dollar nodig."
