BRDC en MSV lanceren in 2013 de Formule 4

Het autosportlandschap breidt volgend jaar nog verder uit. De British Racing Drivers' Club en MotorSportVision roepen de Formule 4 in het leven. Het betreft een goedkope eenzitter-klasse met 2 liter Ford Duratec-motoren met 175 pk en een versnellingsbak van Cosworth.

Het chassis wordt ontwikkeld door RFR, een firma van oud Formule 1-rijder Ralph Firman, in samenwerking met Van Diemen. De kosten voor deelname bedragen 35.000 pond voor een privé-inschrijving en 70.000 pond voor een professioneel team.

Een raceweekend bestaat uit drie wedstrijden van twintig minuten. De kalender voor 2013 bestaat voorlopig uit acht ontmoetingen, onder andere in het voorprogramma van de Britse Grand Prix op Silverstone, de DTM-race op Brands Hatch en de Snetterton 300.

BRDC-voorzitter Derek Warwick: "Ik maakte me zorgen over hoe Britse talenten de autosportladder konden beklimmen. Vroeger was dat simpel, als je goed genoeg was ging je van karting via Formule Ford, Formule 3 en de Formule 2 naar de Formule 1."

"Tegenwoordig is het verwarrend, we hebben veel series, de kosten zijn overal verschillend en het is de vraag wat de beste klasse is om ervaring op te doen. De Formule 4 biedt precies wat we nodig hebben: betrouwbaarheid, slicks, vleugels, paardenkracht en een betaalbare serie."

  Haha, dat dacht ik ook al. Ze roepen deze klasse puur in het leven om meer Britse rijders de kans te geven zich te profileren in de professionele racesport in de hoop dat er meer kanshebbers gaan komen op een stoeltje in de Formule 1 denk ik
