Familie van Sid Watkins ontroerd door talloze steunbetuigingen

De familie van Sid Watkins heeft via een verklaring laten weten dat het de vele steunbetuigingen, eerbetonen en aardige woorden over de voormalig Formule 1-dokter zeer op prijs stelt. Watkins was van 1978 tot en met 2002 als arts werkzaam in de koningsklasse van de autosport, en geldt als pionier op gebied van veiligheid. Watkins overleed woensdag op 84-jarige leeftijd.

De volgende dag stroomden de reacties binnen, en zonder uitzondering klonk daarin de bewondering voor de persoon Sid Watkins door. Dat heeft de familie ontroerd. In het statement zeggen ze: "Professor Sid Watkins, Formule 1-dokter en vooraanstaand neurochirurg, is woensdagavond vredig gestorven na een kort ziekbed in een ziekenhuis in Londen. Zijn familie wil iedereen bedanken voor de vele steunbetuigingen en ontroerende eerbetonen vanuit de autosport, de medische wereld en verder."
