Besluit over twaalfde team gevallen

Nog een week moeten we wachten op de officiële bevestiging, maar de FIA heeft gisteren al besloten welke twaalf teams aan het kampioenschap van 2008 mogen deelnemen. Op 28 april weten we precies welke teams dat zijn. De afgelopen weken heeft de FIA alle ingeschreven teams zorgvuldig bekeken.

Elk team moest zijn plannen op het gebied van infrastructuur en financiën aan de FIA sturen. Zo kon de FIA bekijken hoe serieus de plannen waren en welke teams het meeste zouden bijdragen aan de Formule 1. Naast de elf bestaande teams is er slechts plek voor één nieuw team. Volgens David Richards, teambaas van de grote favoriet voor het laatste plekje in de Formule 1, Prodrive, zaten er ook kansloze voorstellen bij: Veel andere kandidaten gooiden er met hun pet naar. Wij zijn echter zeer serieus bezig geweest. We hebben vergaderingen gehad met bijvoorbeeld Bernie Ecclestone.

Of de twaalfde plek inderdaad naar Prodrive is gegaan moet nog officieel bevestigd worden. Richards was gisteren niet bereikbaar voor commentaar. Een andere favoriet, Carlin Motorsport, wilde ook niks kwijt over het besluit van de FIA. Nog een weekje wachten dus, dan weten we meer. Dan kan het betreffende team zich gaan voorbereiden op zijn debuut in de Formule 1.
