De Formule 1-kalender bestaat volgend jaar mogelijk uit negentien in plaats van twintig Grands Prix. Dat kan Bernie Ecclestone zich in elk geval wel voorstellen. De internationale autosportbond FIA schoof vorige week nog wat met evenementen om ruimte te maken voor een extra race in Europa, met Turkije en Oostenrijk als belangrijkste gegadigden.

Ecclestone aarzelt echter. Op de vraag van Kleine Zeitung of de Red Bull Ring een serieuze kandidaat is, antwoordde hij: "O, echt? Wie zegt dat? Ik heb er met niemand over gesproken. Ik neig meer naar Istanbul. Maar ik ga momenteel uit van een schema met negentien races, dat zou geen probleem zijn. De hotelsituatie in de buurt van het circuit in Oostenrijk is nog steeds een ramp. Dat was altijd een probleem. Het is niet geschikt voor de hedendaagse Formule 1. Ik denk dat ik begin volgende week beslis over de kalender voor 2013."
