Emirates zet deur om team te sponsoren wagenwijd open

Emirates tekende begin deze maand een vijfjarig contract als sponsor van de Formule 1, maar dat betekent niet dat de vliegmaatschappij uit Dubai niet ook een overeenkomst sluit met een team. Daar hebben ze al ervaring mee, in 2006 was Emirates geldschieter van McLaren.

Emirates-voorzitter sjeik Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum houdt in Arabian Business alle opties open. "We worden graag geassocieerd met topsport en Formule 1 is een van de grootste sporten ter wereld. Wat we zeven jaar geleden met McLaren deden was een samenloop van omstandigheden en een kans voor Emirates. Het was eigenlijk vrij goed."

Bernie Ecclestone heeft geen enkel bezwaar als Emirates ook met een team in zee gaat. "Als zij het verlangen hebben om in die richting uit te breiden, waarom niet? Het zou een logische volgende stap zijn om te besluiten om ook als teamsponsor terug te keren."
