Explosieve sfeer in Bahrein in aanloop naar Grand Prix

Bahrein is komend weekend gastheer van een van de meest beladen Grands Prix van het jaar. De situatie in het oliestaatje is sinds de opstand tegen het regime van twee jaar geleden altijd wat meer gespannen rond deze periode. Een aantal ontploffingen in Manama markeerde gisteren de opmaat naar het Formule 1-evenement.

Persbureau AP bericht dat een gascilinder explodeerde in het financiële district van de stad. De New York Times meldt dat de organisatie van de Grand Prix de veiligheidsmaatregelen heeft aangescherpt. Bernie Ecclestone maakt zich echter geen zorgen. "Ik zie geen reden waarom de race in Bahrein geen succes zal zijn. Is er wat gebeurd? Daar ben ik niet van op de hoogte. Niemand demonstreert", bewaart hij tegenover AFP de rust.

De oppositie grijpt de Grand Prix graag aan om de onvrede over het regime te ventileren. Bob Fernley, vice-teambaas bij Force India, vertelt aan Reuters: "Je moet wel dom zijn om te denken dat er geen vorm van protest komt. Als ze de Formule 1 zien als de perfecte gelegenheid om actie te voeren en hun hart te luchten, dan is dat prima zolang het op een normale manier gebeurt."

Toro Rosso-teambaas Franz Tost voegt toe: "Ik zie het niet als probleem om naar Bahrein te gaan, net als vorig jaar. Ik kijk er zelfs naar uit. Formule 1 is entertainment. We moeten ons niet bezig houden met politiek. Het is voor ons zaak om daar heen te gaan en gewoon te racen. De politieke kant van het verhaal laten we over aan anderen."
