Force India voelt hete adem van McLaren in de nek

Het team van Force India heeft zich voor dit seizoen ten doel gesteld om aan het einde van het jaar bij de beste zes constructeurs te staan. Dat verklapte vice-teambaas Bob Fernley aan Autosport. Force India staat momenteel vijfde, maar voelt de hete adem van McLaren in de nek.

Fernley: "De doelstelling voor dit seizoen was minstens de zesde plek heroveren. Vooralsnog bezetten we de vijfde plaats, met een geringe voorsprong van drie punten op McLaren. Kunnen we ze het hele seizoen achter ons houden? Dat wordt een hels karwei, maar we gaan ons best doen. We moeten pragmatisch zijn, McLaren is een erg goed team."

Force India scoorde alleen in de seizoensopener in Australië met beide auto's punten. Om zich te verzekeren van een mooie klassering in de eindstand is dat het noodzakelijk dat Paul di Resta en Adrian Sutil vaker samen in de punten finishen, weet Fernley. "Dat is wat we moeten doen. We dienen gefocust te zijn en geen mogelijkheid onbenut te laten."

"Het is niet de vraag of, maar wanneer we het podium mogen betreden. Dichterbij dan in Bahrein kan je niet komen. Het is frustrerend dat we het net niet haalden. We strijden tegen topteams en presteren. Ik verwachtte een moeizamer jaar omdat iedereen nu bekend is met de banden en de lat steeds hoger gelegd wordt. Echter, we doen volop mee in de frontlinie en hadden in Bahrein met gemak op eigen kracht met beide wagens in de top zes kunnen eindigen."

Haha, voor McLaren eindigen? In achteruitlopen zeker?

Terwijl McLaren over een paar maanden voor de overwinningen zal strijden, strijdt FI voor een plek in Q3.

  Dat FI McLaren achter zich gaat houden lijkt inderdaad vrij onwaarschijnlijk; maar om nou meteen te stellen dat ze straks meteen moeite gaan hebben een plek in Q3 te behalen vind ik ook weer wat ver gaan.
  
  Het is niet alleen McLaren maar waardoor ze momenteel goed voor Q3 meedoen.

  Inderdaad FI komt bijna altijd met 2 wagens in Q2, dat is al jaren zo. Nu ze goed zijn begonnen gaat dat echt niet zomaar veraderen. McLaren voor blijven zal wel erg lastig worden.

  Je zegt het goed Kevin, overwinningen ja, het kampioenschap is voorbij. Geen goede auto en dan ook geen indrukwekkende line-up.
