Jean Todt staat achter onder vuur liggende Bernie Ecclestone

Jean Todt, president van de internationale autosportbond FIA, heeft zich achter Bernie Ecclestone geschaard. De commerciële baas van de Formule 1 ligt onder vuur door een aanklacht voor omkoping in Duitsland. Bij een veroordeling zou zijn toekomst aan een zijden draadje hangen.

Todt neemt het tegenover persbureau DPA op voor Ecclestone. "Bernie heeft alle recht op zijn baan en hij levert goed werk. Bovendien is hij in dienst van commerciële rechtenhouder CVC Capital, dus het is sowieso hun beslissing."

Een al dan niet gedwongen vertrek van Ecclestone zou de Formule 1 aardig in de problemen brengen, meent voormalig teambaas Paul Stoddart. "CVC bevindt zich in een benarde positie. Als Bernie weg moet, dan gooit dat de boel voor bijvoorbeeld de Concorde Agreement flink in de war", verklaarde hij aan Bloomberg.
