Thailand verschuift aandacht naar Grand Prix op Phuket

Thailand geeft de pogingen om op de Formule 1-kalender te geraken niet op na de tegenslag in Bangkok. De gemeenteraad van de Thaise hoofdstad nam een wet aan die racen in de oude binnenstad verbiedt. Dat plannetje van de regering viel dus in duigen.

Maar Thailand laat zich daardoor niet uit het veld slaan. Een Grand Prix op het populaire schiereiland Phuket is een mogelijk alternatief voor Bangkok. Somsak Pureesrisak, minister van Sport en Toerisme, verklaarde in de Bangkok Post: "Ik kan bevestigen dat we geen Grand Prix kunnen houden op Ratchadamnoen Avenue. De wet die sinds een maand van kracht is verbiedt elke vorm van racen in de binnenstad van Bangkok."

"Phuket zou een ideale locatie kunnen zijn, het voldoet aan onze doelstelling om toerisme te promoten. We hebben nog tijd om een Formule 1-evenement voor te bereiden."
