Mark Webber heeft toekomst ferm in eigen handen

Mark Webber bepaalt min of meer zelf over zijn lot bij Red Bull Racing. Het contract van de Australiër loopt na 2013 af en in de geruchtenmolen draait al geruime tijd de naam van Kimi Raikkonen als mogelijke vervanger. Maar Webber is nog niet weg.

Hij deelde aan de Australische Sky Sports Radio mede: "Het initiatief ligt ferm bij mij, dat is prettig. Ik moet natuurlijk wel goed blijven presteren, anders raak ik dat initiatief kwijt en dienen anderen zich aan als betere kandidaat voor mijn stoeltje bij Red Bull Racing."

"Mijn contact met Dietrich Mateschitz is heel goed. Ik informeer hem regelmatig over hoe ik denk over de toekomst, of mijn energie en motivatie nog voldoende zijn om op dit niveau te acteren. Ik vat het niet licht op. Ik ben zeer gedreven, gefocust en bagatelliseer het belang van racen op dit level niet. Ik hou ervan."

Webber heeft echter geen enkele haast om de knoop door te hakken. "Ik heb belangrijke beslissingen te nemen, maar dat gebeurt niet op korte termijn. Ik heb nog wat tijd nodig en het kan wel wachten, denk ik."
