Mercedes W196 van Fangio voor 17,5 miljoen pond geveild

Een Mercedes W196 uit 1954 heeft bij een veiling bij het Goodwood Festival of Speed 17,5 miljoen pond opgeleverd. Een recordbedrag voor een auto waarbij het vorige record (11 miljoen pond voor een Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa) bijna in het niet valt. Door commissies en belastingen loopt de prijs van de oude bolide van Juan Manuel Fangio nog op naar 19,6 miljoen pond.

Autosport-historicus Doug Nye vertelde aan Eurosport: "De eerste keer dat ik deze wagen zag moest ik happen naar lucht. Het was baanbrekende technologie en een baanbrekende coureur bestuurde de bolide. Sommigen vinden de auto er afgeleefd uitzien, maar dat maakt niets uit. De echt zeldzame wagens zijn de bolides waar geen restauratiewerk aan is uitgevoerd. Bij restauraties gaat een deel van de historie verloren door een nieuwe verflaag of een reparatie. Dat is bij deze Mercedes W196 niet het geval, deze auto heeft de tand des tijds doorstaan."
