Newey hoopt op meer ruimte voor creatieve ingevingen

Red Bull Racing-ontwerper Adrian Newey pleit voor meer vrijheden voor de Formule 1-auto's. Al jaren maakt de internationale autosportbond FIA er een sport van om de ruimte voor eigen inbreng steeds verder in te dammen. Een zorgwekkende ontwikkeling.

Die mening uit Newey op Crash.net. "Als je tien jaar terug in de tijd gaat en naar de auto's van nu kijkt, dan zien ze er wellicht raar uit en ogen ze belachelijk. Ik hoop dat de trend van alsmaar meer beperkingen op creatief gebied zich niet voort zet. Anders riskeren we dat de reglementen, en niet de engineers, in de nabije toekomst de auto's voor je ontwerpen en dat alles op elkaar lijkt."

Voor volgend jaar wacht in elk geval een grote uitdaging. Newey: "De nieuwe motoren vereisen veel koeling. Niet alleen voor de krachtbron, maar ook voor de turbo en de energie hergebruikende systemen. Dat is de grootste uitdaging. De regels met betrekking tot de versnellingsbakken veranderen ook en de aerodynamica is eveneens aan wijzigingen onderhevig, dus het is een hele opgave. Het is moeilijk voor alle teams omdat de ontwikkeling van de huidige auto gelijktijdig plaats vindt met de totstandkoming van de nieuwe bolide."
