India ontbreekt in 2014 definitief op de Formule 1-kalender

India organiseert volgend jaar geen Grand Prix. Dat hebben Bernie Ecclestone en promotor Yaypee Sports bekend gemaakt. De belastingperikelen zijn niet de oorzaak. De opmaak van de Formule 1-kalender ligt ten grondslag aan het schrappen van India voor 2014. Het betreft een tussenjaar, in 2015 moet Buddh International Circuit weer een Grand Prix huisvesten.

Ecclestone legt aan het Indiase persbureau IANS uit: "Toen we een vijfjarig contract met Yaypee tekenden was onze intentie een plek in de eerste seizoenshelft voor India. Zij wilden de Grand Prix in oktober houden. Destijds stemden we daar mee in, maar voor 2015 lijkt India voorbestemd voor een race vroeg in het jaar. Met een race aan het einde van 2014 zouden ze in de knel komen. Daarom is in overleg met de promotors besloten om in 2014 geen Grand Prix van India op het programma te zetten en voor 2015 wel weer."

Yaypee bevestigt die lezing van Ecclestone. Directeur Sameer Gaur: "Als Formula One Management van ons verlangt om in maart 2015 een race te organiseren, dan hebben wij daar geen enkele moeite mee."
