Honda keert in 2015 terug in de Formule 1. De Japanse autofabrikant was in het verleden diverse periodes actief in de koningsklasse van de autosport. Zo ook eind jaren tachtig van de vorige eeuw, toen Honda met McLaren een schier onoverwinnelijke combinatie vormde.

In die tijd reed ook nog ene Ayrton Senna voor McLaren. De legendarische Braziliaan was befaamd vanwege zijn sublieme kwalificatierondjes. In Japan 1989 was hij maar liefst 1,7 seconde sneller dan teamgenoot Alain Prost op plek twee. Honda heeft die ronde met behulp van telemetrie-data, lichten en geluidsinstallaties nagebootst op het circuit van Suzuka.
