'Ecclestone speelt politiek spelletje met New Jersey'

De eerste Formule 1-race tegen een achtergrond van Manhattan behoort nog steeds tot de mogelijkheden voor 2014. Dat beweert een anonieme teambaas in Speed Week. De Grand Prix in New Jersey kreeg wel de nodige kritiek van Bernie Ecclestone te verduren.

De commerciële baas van de Formule 1 noemde het project een rommeltje en verkondigde dat het niet door zou gaan voor volgend seizoen. Hij krabbelde echter al wat terug. "Nee, nee", antwoordde hij aan Reuters op de vraag of hij New Jersey uitsluit voor 2014. "Ze hebben een contract, als ze daar aan voldoen zal de race doorgaan. Daar zouden wij zeer gelukkig mee zijn."

Het is allemaal onderdeel van het spel van Ecclestone. Hij probeert de organisatie alleen maar wat onder druk te zetten om vaart te maken met voorbereiding, zo redeneert de teambaas. "Het is niet de eerste keer dat we dit soort uitspraken horen. Ik zou New Jersey nog niet afschrijven."
