Red Bull Racing-coureur Sebastian Vettel gaat de titelstrijd ruim voor het einde van het seizoen in zijn voordeel beslissen. Dat denkt Mercedes-teampresident Niki Lauda. Een vierde kampioenschap kan Vettel eigenlijk niet meer ontgaan.

Lauda betoogt in Bild: "Ik durf te voorspellen dat Vettel in Abu Dhabi al kampioen is, dat is de op twee na laatste race. Zijn voorsprong was al groot voordat hij in België domineerde en Spa is als circuit niet eens ideaal voor de Red Bull Racing. Voor Monza is hij misschien geen favoriet, maar voor elke andere baan heeft hij de beste auto. Dat moet genoeg zijn voor een nieuwe titel."

Maar Mercedes gooit de handdoek niet in de ring, benadrukt Lauda in Osterreich. "We geven niet op. Al ben ik ook realistisch. Vettel heerste op Spa en ik geloof dat hij nog wel drie, vier tienden per ronde harder had gekund. Wij hebben ons aanzienlijk verbeterd dit jaar, maar aan Red Bull Racing kunnen we nog niet tippen."
