Ward bevestigt kandidatuur voor presidentsverkiezingen FIA

David Ward heeft zich officieel verkiesbaar gesteld voor de positie van voorzitter van de internationale autosportbond FIA. Jean Todt bekleedt die functie momenteel, maar eind dit jaar vinden nieuwe verkiezingen plaats. Ward heeft afstand gedaan van zijn rol als directeur bij de FIA Foundation om een gooi te doen naar het presidentschap.

"Na lang en hard nadenken heb ik besloten om mezelf kandidaat te stellen voor het ambt van FIA-president", begint Ward. "De verkiezingsperiode begint in september en het is voor mij noodzakelijk om FIA-leden te benaderen om nominaties in de wacht te slepen. Onder deze omstandigheden is het volgens mij niet meer dan gepast dat ik stop als hoofd van de FIA Foundation. Hoewel dat juridisch gezien niet verplicht is, de FIA Foundation is een onafhankelijke instantie, acht ik het in het belang van het goede doel om terug te treden."

Ward was vroeger adviseur voor voormalig FIA-president Max Mosley en stond Todt terzijde tijdens diens succesvolle campagne in 2009. Daarna trad hij in dienst bij de FIA Foundation en maakte zich sterk voor verkeersveiligheid. Todt heeft nog niet bekendgemaakt of hij een tweede termijn als FIA-voorzitter ambieert.

    Zou wellicht een betere keus zijn dan Jean Todt, echter of hij kans maakt...

    Ik zou het toejuichen! Todt komt op mij over als een slappe zak sinds hij FIA president is. Tijd voor wat meer daden binnen de FIA

    Of een nieuwe president als bijvoorbeeld deze Ward het beter zal doen dan Jean Todt zal altijd afwachten blijven, maar persoonlijk zie ik Jean Todt graag als FIA president verdwijnen.

    Sinds zijn aantreden heb ik niet een echt belangrijk wapenfeit van de man voorbij zien komen, en is de man als FIA president zelf ook bijzonder onzichtbaar. Over Jean Todt zijn voorganger Max Mosley valt ook veel te zeggen, waarbij onder meer dat zijn ideeën soms wat te rigoreus waren; echter liet de man wel zijn stem horen, en wist hij heel goed hoe de F1 politiek in elkaar stak.

    Todt gaat terug naar Ferrari gezelig met oude vrienden Ross Brawn, Roy Byrne en Allison Ferrari weer naar boven helpen.
