Mark Webber wimpelt aftastende Formule 1-teams af

Bepaalde teams hebben een poging gewaagd om Mark Webber toch tot een langer verblijf in de Formule 1 te verleiden. De Red Bull Racing-coureur besloot eerder dit jaar de koningsklasse van de autosport na dit jaar vaarwel te zeggen om zijn geluk te beproeven in de lange afstands-racerij. Dat weerhoudt sommige renstallen niet om de Australiër toch te polsen.

Dat onthulde Webber in de Daily Mail. "Er waren nog wel Formule 1-teams die de mogelijkheden bij mij aftastten, dat is nog steeds zo trouwens, maar mijn besluit staat vast, ik ben blij met mijn keuze en kijk uit naar de toekomst. De auto's in het World Endurance Championship benaderen de bolides in de Formule 1. Ze gaan erg snel en zijn in bepaalde situaties gelijkwaardig aan de Formule 1."

Over de huidige Formule 1 zegt hij: "De wagens in de Formule 1 van nu zijn nog steeds moeilijk te besturen, maar vroeger met de V10 en de bandenoorlog moesten we met veel meer kracht en grip omspringen. Daar hadden we als rijders echt onze handen vol aan. Nu is het veel meer een gecontroleerd tempo toepassen en zorgen dat het materiaal en de banden het tot de eindstreep uithouden."
