Formule 1-project in Valencia op sterven na dood

Valencia staakt de pogingen om de Formule 1 terug te halen naar de streek van de sinaasappels. De Spaanse stad was tot en met 2012 gastheer voor de Grand Prix van Europa, maar raakte de plek op de kalender voor dit seizoen kwijt. Sindsdien zette Valencia in op een roulatieschema met Barcelona.

Het verlangen om de Spaanse Grand Prix te delen bleek niet wederzijds. Valencia trekt nu zijn conclusies en begraaft de ambities voor een Formule 1-evenement. El Mundo Deportivo en EFE citeren racebaas Gonzalo Gobert: "Valencia stopt met de Formule 1. Het Circuit de Catalunya-Barcelona weigerde een samenwerking. Een huwelijk is alleen mogelijk als beide partijen willen trouwen. We onderhandelen nu met Bernie Ecclestone over de afwikkeling van ons contract."
