Dean Stoneman domineert spannende regenrace op Oschersleben

Dean Stoneman heeft zojuist de eerste Formule 2-race van het weekend op Oschersleben gedomineerd. In de regen was de titelkandidaat veel te snel voor zijn concurrentie en eindigde zestien seconden voor Kazim Vasiliauskas.

De race op Oschersleben begon al in de regen en het werd de allereerste regenrace in de Formule 2 van dit seizoen. Stoneman kende een uitstekende start en pakte nog vóór de eerste bocht de leiding in de race over. De Brit startte de race vanaf de vijfde plaats. Daarna hoefde Stoneman niet meer achter zich te kijken en reed bijna een seconde per ronde weg van zijn achtervolgers.

Kampioenschapsleider Jolyon Palmer kende ook een goede race. De Brit startte als achtste in de race, maar ging in de openingsronden al meteen voorbij aan Mihai Marinescu, Jack Clarke en Benjamin Bailly. Daarna ging Palmer zich mengen in de strijd om de tweede plaats, die op dat moment ging tussen Kazim Vasiliauskas en Sergei Afanasiev.

Afanasiev maakte daarna een klein foutje waardoor Palmer de derde plaats overnam en meteen aansloot bij Vasiliauskas. Palmer leek de snellere coureur, maar wist niet voorbij te komen aan de coureur uit Lithouwen. Palmer eindigde dus als derde en verloor hiermee tien waardevolle punten op Stoneman, die bijna zestien seconden voor Vasiliauskas eindigde.

Afanasiev eindigde ondanks zijn uitstapje eerder in de race nog als vierde, gevolgd door de Belg Bailly. Will Bratt en Philipp Eng kende nog een mooi gevecht in de slotronden voor de zesde plaats, maar Eng kwam in het gras en verloor hiermee veel tijd op Bratt. De Oostenrijker eindigde als zevende, achter Bratt. Doordat Eng veel tijd verloor kon Nicola De Marco aansluiten en de Italiaan waagde in de laatste ronde nog een aanval. Deze liep echter verkeerd af en De Marco kwam in het grind terecht. Kelvin Snoeks maakte hier dankbaar gebruik van en pakte de achtste plaats over. De Marco kwam wel nog als negende over de streep, nadat hij bij de start al heel moeizaam wegkwam.
