Stoneman met tweede zege van het weekend hard op weg naar titel

Dean Stoneman heeft een grote slag geslagen richting de eerste Formule 2-titel in zijn carriére. De Brit pakte gisteren al de overwinning in de eerste race op Oschersleben en vandaag kwam hij wederom als eerste over de finish. Titelrivaal Jolyon Palmer kende een zeer slechte race.

Het bleek een weinig spannende race te worden op Oschersleben. Stoneman behield bij de start van de race de leiding en liep langzaam weg van zijn achtervolgers. Nicola De Marco kon als enige coureur het tempo van de Brit nog enigszins volgen, maar de Italiaan moest met nog maar drie ronden te gaan zijn auto langs de kant zetten.

Hierdoor kwam Kazim Vasiliauskas naar de tweede positie, terwijl Sergei Afanasiev de laatste podiumplaats in handen kreeg. Benjamin Bailly hield een groot gedeelte van de race de coureurs achter zich op met rondetijden die een seconde langzamer waren dan de concurrentie. Kelvin Snoeks wist de Belg uiteindelijk wel te passeren en zo eindigde de Nederlander keurig als vierde. Bailly pakte de vijfde plaats, terwijl Mihai Marinescu het laatste puntje pakte met de zesde positie.

Jolyon Palmer kende een zeer teleurstellende race. De Brit eindigde als twaalfde en ziet hierdoor rivaal Stoneman sterk uitlopen in de titelstrijd. Stoneman staat momenteel 31 punten voor op Palmer en met nog maar één raceweekend te gaan en met nog slechts vijftig punten beschikbaar, staat Stoneman dicht bij zijn eerste Formule 2-titel.
