Leclerc pakt zege in chaotische race, De Vries tweede

Na een moeilijk weekend in zijn eigen Monaco, mocht Charles Leclerc in Bakoe weer aan de champagne. De Monegask pakte gisteren al de pole en reed naar de zege in een chaotische hoofdrace. Nyck de Vries startte de race als vierde, maar mocht na de race wederom de gang naar het podium maken. Het betekent voor de jonge Nederlander wederom een sterk resultaat na zijn zege in de sprintrace in Monaco.

Net als vorig jaar stond de race op het Baku City Circuit bol van spektakel: de race werd zelfs voortijdig afgevlagd vanwege een crash van Sean Galael in de achtste bocht. Galael crashte op een dusdanige manier dat de baan geblokkeerd werd en niemand er langs kon.

Niet alleen Galael ging in de fout, Johnny Cecotto was de eerste die een Safety Car veroorzaakte. Cecotte ging bij het uitkomen van de pits in de fout. Antonio Fuoco lanceerde zichzelf op de auto van Sergio Canamasas en ook Nabil Jeffri en Louis Deletraz kwamen niet ongeschonden uit de strijd. De verschillende incidenten zorgden ervoor dat de race meerdere keren geneutraliseerd moest worden.

Vooraan trokken Leclerc en De Vries zich niets aan van de chaos. De overwinning van Leclerc kwam geen moment in gevaar, terwijl Nyck de Vries oprukte van de vierde naar de tweede plaats bij de start. Eerst moest Matsushita eraan geloven, niet veel later moest ook Nicholas Latifi zich gewonnen geven.

Latifi wist nog wel derde te worden. Voor Leclerc is het zijn derde zege van het jaar en daarmee wordt de leiding in het kampioenschap verder uitgebreid. Nyck de Vries klimt dankzij zijn podiumplaats naar de zesde plaats in het kampioenschap. De sprintrace in Bakoe wordt morgen om 12:00 uur Nederlandse tijd verreden.
