Alex Palou maakt seizoen af voor Campos Racing

Alex Palou debuteert komend weekend in Jerez in de Formule 2. De Spanjaard stapt in bij het team van Campos Racing, waar hij Robert Visoiu vervangt. Visoiu mist de laatste twee weekenden van dit seizoen vanwege 'persoonlijke redenen'.

Palou was in 2015 en 2016 al namens Campos Racing actief in de GP3. Dit jaar racete hij in het Japanse Formule 3-kampioenschap, in combinatie met enkele optredens in de Formule V8 3.5. In Jerez en Abu Dhabi rijdt de 20-jarige Spanjaard aan de zijde van Ralph Boschung voor Campos Racing in de Formule 2.

    Juniorenklassen : EuroFormula Open, een goede stap voorwaarts of een stap zijwaarts zonder potentie?

    Sinds 2009 bestaat de klasse European F3 Open, voorheen het Spaanse Formule 3 kampioenschap en hedendaags het Euroformula Open in conjunction met het Spaanse Formule 3 kampioenschap.
    We gaan kijken wat er met de kampioenen en frontrunners van dit kampioenschap gebeurt is. We stellen de vraag of dit een respectabele klasse is, of dat dit daadwerkelijk een toevoeging heeft op de FIA ladder.

    Mijn 1e lijstje met coureurs is er een met opvallende namen : Carmen Jorda, Kevin Ceccon, Carlos Munoz, Tatiana Calderon, Ed Jones, Sandy Stuvik, Alex Palou, Ferdinand Habsburg en Colton Herta.
    Niet direct een lijst met namen die men zo 1,2,3 bekend mee is. Jorda kennen we vooral van de vormen, Munoz is 2x runner op op Indy geweest, Jones is rookie of the year in IndyCar en Colton Herta is IndyLights coureur.

    Het is een bonte verzameling coureurs die via de Europese ladder hun Formule 1 carriere wilde behalen. Een 'Formule 3 Lights' kampioenschap. Eentje waar de coureurs in rijden die niet goed genoeg zijn voor het FIA European Formula 3 kampioenschap.
    Een alternatieve stap naar de top van de Autosport. Veel van deze coureurs stromen door naar het inmiddels karig niveau hebbende World Series 3.5 V8. Een ooit zo glorieus kampioenschap waar ik in het verleden al eens aandacht aan besteed heb.

    Mijn 2e lijstje bestaat uit 2 coureurs : Richard Verschoor en Harrison Scott. Voor dit kampioenschap heeft bijvoorbeeld Richard Verschoor een soort van scolarship gewonnen met zijn titels in NEZ en Spanish F4. Was deze stap voor Richard een goede geweest? Ik denk persoonlijk van wel. Het ligt dichter bij de Formule 3, is ook een eenheidsklasse en heeft over het algemeen meer leermomenten op een rustiger niveau.
    Van de andere kant is het niet geheel objectief kijken, zeker als je beseft dat 2017 een leerjaar voor Verschoor is.
    Uit de huidige vorm van het kampioenschap hebben we geen Formule 1 coureurs. Vanaf de Spaanse variant (voor 2009) komen Roberto Mehri, Carlos Sainz Jr en Sebastian Vettel.
    Maar, ik denk dat er dit jaar verandering in kan komen. Ik zie namelijk voor het eerst sinds ik deze klasse volg een coureur die echt potentie heeft om door te groeien naar sowieso Formule 2 en misschien ook nog wel Formule 1. Zijn naam : Harrison Scott. Een goede coureur die ook in het Formula Renault 2.0 Eurocup kampioenschap de concurrentie aan ging met Lando Norris.
    Harrison is dit jaar met 2 weekenden spare al kampioen geworden en heeft het veld gedeklasseerd. Het zijn competitieve races in EuroFormula Open, maar het niveau is van een lagere categorie als de FIA broer. Scott, daarentegen, is 21 jaar en heeft die potentie die men nodig heeft om door te groeien in vervolgseries. Ik zeg niet dat deze jongen de toekomstige wereldkampioen is, ik denk wel dat een jongen met zijn ambities en klasse een aanwinst zou zijn voor elke respectabele Formule 2 renstal.
