Rookie Zhou wil meer dan strijden om titel voor beste nieuwkomer

De Formule 2-coureur die dit jaar misschien wel de beste indruk maakt is nieuwkomer Guanyu Zhou. Voor zichzelf stelt hij in de rest van het seizoen strijden om de algemene titel als doel.

Zhou debuteert dit jaar in de Formule 2, nadat hij zich vorig seizoen regelmatig goed liet zien in het Europees Formule 3. Daar waar F3-kampioen Mick Schumacher het af en toe best lastig heeft, lijkt Zhou zich een stuk beter op zijn plek te voelen in de Formule 2. Halverwege het seizoen is de UNI Virtuosi-coureur duidelijk de beste rookie en staat hij op een keurige zesde positie in het kampioenschap.

Zhou had niet verwacht meteen zo sterk te zijn

De achterstand van Zhou, die ook Renault-junior is, op nummer 3 Sergio Sette Camara is slechts 22 punten. Tevens pakte hij al drie podiumplaatsen. Het doel van de Chinees is dan ook duidelijk: hij wil meer dan alleen de titel voor beste rookie. "Van mijn kant vecht ik duidelijk niet voor de rookietitel, maar voor de algemene titel. In het begin is het prettig in de buurt van de top te zitten en na een aantal races denk je absoluut aan de titel."

"Eerlijk gezegd heb ik me niet gericht op het vechten voor de titel, maar ik strijd om zeges en podia en het is prettig om te strijden met en consistenter te zijn dan coureurs die meer ervaring hebben. We gaan absoluut voor die plaats in de top 3. Het begin van het seizoen was lastig met alle nieuwe circuits, maar in Europa voel ik me meer op mijn gemak. Ik heb me redelijk snel aan de auto aangepast en we zijn snel geweest."

"We strijden om dezelfde plaats als mijn meer ervaren teamgenoot, nadat we gedurende het seizoen flinke progressie geboekt hebben. We zullen proberen daarmee door te gaan. Ik verwachtte niet meteen zo snel te zijn, dus dat is beter. Ik ben nog steeds gemotiveerd om harder te werken."
