Correa nog altijd in kunstmatige coma, Isaakyan vervanger in Rusland

De familie van Juan Manuel Correa heeft woensdagavond wederom een update uitgebracht over de huidige medische toestand van de coureur. De Ecuadoraanse Amerikaan ligt nog altijd in een kunstmatige coma.

Correa was tijdens het Grand Prix-weekend in België op zaterdag betrokken bij een horrorcrash. Anthoine Hubert liet daarbij het leven, terwijl Correa met verwondingen aan zijn benen en zijn rug naar een ziekenhuis werd afgevoerd. Een week later traden er complicaties op toen de coureur van Sauber Junior Team by Charouz overgeplaatst werd naar een ziekenhuis in Londen.

Sindsdien ligt Correa in een kunstmatig coma, waarbij de functie van de longen ondersteund worden door een ECMO-machine. Op die manier moeten de longen rust krijgen. Volgens de familie van Correa werpt dat haar vruchten af. In een nieuwe update hebben zijn ouders naar buiten gebracht dat er kleine verbeteringen zichtbaar zijn in de longfunctie van hun zoon, maar ligt hij nog wel in een kunstmatige coma.

"Juan Manuel ligt nog op de intensive care in een kunstmatige coma. Hoewel zijn longen langzaam herstellen, wordt zijn ademhaling ondersteund door een ECMO en een ademhalingsventilator. De verwondingen aan Juan Manuels benen blijven een belangrijk punt van zorgen en hij zal onder het mes gaan zodra zijn longen sterk genoeg zijn om de procedure aan te kunnen."

Isaakyan vervangt Correa in Rusland

Voor Sauber Junior Team by Charouz gaat het F2-seizoen over ruim anderhalve week verder in Rusland. Nadat het team in Italië met een auto aan de start stond, zal er in Sochi wel weer een tweede coureur present zijn voor het team. Matevos Isaakyan mag in Sochi zijn Formule 2-debuut maken en zal daarna ook in Abu Dhabi in actie komen voor het team.

  Wat is goed komen in dit verband?
  Vooralsnog mag hij al blij zijn als hij het er levend en min of meer gezond vanaf brengt. Maar wat hij daarna nog kan, zal blijken.
  Of hij ooit nog weer in een raceauto kan stappen, is op dit moment natuurlijk nog helemaal niet aan de orde.
