Toestand Correa verbeterd: coureur ontwaakt uit kunstmatig coma

Formule 2-coureur Juan Manuel Correa is vrijdag ontwaakt uit zijn kunstmatige coma en hij wordt ook niet meer ondersteund door een ECMO-machine. Dat maakte zijn familie bekend in een statement.

Correa was drie weken geleden betrokken bij de angstaanjagende crash in de Formule 2-race op Spa-Francorchamps, waarbij Anthoine Hubert het leven liet. De Ecuadoraans-Amerikaanse coureur liep daarbij zware verwondingen aan zijn benen op en had ook een blessure aan zijn rug. Na overplaatsing naar een ziekenhuis in Londen kreeg hij tevens te kampen met een acuut ademhalingsprobleem.

Inmiddels lijkt de situatie van Correa dus te verbeteren. Zijn ouders maakten via zijn website bekend dat hij inmiddels uit zijn kunstmatige coma ontwaakt is. "Vandaag is Juan Manuel van de ECMO-machine gehaald en uit zijn kunstmatige coma ontwaakt. Hoewel dit geweldig nieuws en een stap in de goede richting is, zit hij nog steeds in een race tegen de klok. Juan Manuel is bij bewustzijn, maar nog niet volledig wakker."

"De doktoren maakten duidelijk dat dit een aantal dagen zal duren, omdat hij meer dan twee weken in een kunstmatige coma gelegen heeft. Ze hebben ook duidelijk gemaakt dat Juan Manuel fragiel en medisch gezien kwetsbaar is, en dat hij op de intensive care zal blijven liggen. Zijn toestand is verbeterd van kritisch naar ernstig."

Prioriteit artsen ligt nu bij beenbreuken

De zorgen zijn echter nog niet verdwenen, want aan zijn beenbreuken hebben de doktoren tot nu toe weinig aandacht kunnen besteden. De prioriteit ligt nu op de behandeling van deze verwondingen. "De medische prioriteit van Juan Manuel verlegt zich nu van de longen naar de verwondingen aan zijn benen, die hij meer dan twee weken geleden opliep."

"Sindsdien is daar niets aan gedaan, buiten de eerste interventie op de dag van het ongeluk. De doktoren zitten in een race tegen de klok om een grote operatie uit te voeren, om het risico op blijvende schade aan zijn rechterbeen te verminderen. Dat kunnen ze echter pas doen als zijn longen klaar zijn om de lange operatie te ondergaan. Zodra er meer bekend wordt over de medische toestand van Juan Manuel, dan zullen we dat bekendmaken."

Hij is nu totaal verzwakt en dan weer langdurig onder narcose. Dat klinkt niet goed.
En dat moet ook nog eens zo snel mogelijk gebeuren. Hopen dat dat goed gaat.
